Urdang Graduates is run by City, University of London and is committed to providing an accessible website for all users. We are working to follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standard.

How accessible this website is?

We expect there are several accessibility challenges on ‘urdanggraduates.city.ac.uk’ however, due to the limitations of WordPress, some features of our website may not be accessible to everyone.

We are working to improve the accessibility of our website on this platform and we will continue to make changes as we become aware of new accessibility standards for WordPress and best practices.

We have implemented the following accessibility features on our website:

  • We use high-contrast colours and fonts. This makes our website easier to read for people with visual impairments.
  • We’ve have made the website text as simple as possible to understand so that everyone can access our website, regarding of their abilities. This includes people with cognitive impairments, dyslexia, or who are not native speakers of the language.
  • We provide keyboard navigation. This allows people with motor impairments to use their keyboard to navigate our website.
  • We provide text alternatives for all images. This allows people who are blind or visually impaired to understand the content of our images.
  • We make most of our website accessible to people who use screen readers, including the most recent versions. This allows people who are blind or visually impaired to use our website independently.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible. At this time, we are running an accessibility check and will be updating this section, but we have listed some issues we are aware of.

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons. 

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Embedded videos do not have captions, audio description or transcripts. 
  • You may not be able to recognise the role of some elements across the website when using assistive technologies. 
  • Dropdown not accessible to keyboard. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.1 (keyboard)
  • Our pop-up modal forms and image gallery does not trap focus. This fails WCAG 2.1 keyboard success criterion 2.1.2 (no keyboard trap) 
  • You cannot skip to the main content when using a screen reader. This fails WCAG Navigable 2.4 success criterion 2.4.1 (bypass blocks level A) 
  • Across the website, in content implemented using markup languages, IDs are not always unique or confirming to value values (4.1.1 parsing) and (4.1.2 Name, Role, Value). 
  • Search filter or search tags not accessible to keyboard or screen readers. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.1 (keyboard)
  • Some of our images do not have text alternatives – we are working to add text alternatives to all of our images.  
  • Some of our videos do not have captions – we are working to add captions to all of our videos. We apologise for any inconvenience these issues may cause. 

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

At this time we are running an accessibility check and will update this section, but we have listed some issues we are currently aware of.

  • Multiple links to same page when profile image and hyperlinked title 
  • Users are unable to change colours, contrast levels, fonts.  
  • Page zoom is restricted, and font size is fixed. This doesn’t allow users to zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen. 

How we tested this website

Both City and out partnering development agency incorporate the WCAG 2.1 AA standard into every stage of development when designing and building new pagesWe test pages with multiple browsers, on macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, with and without screen reader software. 

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

Our teams are committed to making our websites and apps accessible.  

Within City, we have user experience team and partnering with Fabrik Brands to take the appropriate steps towards compliance and working through this list of issues to remediate as much as we can ourselves.

We launched https://urdanggraduates.city.ac.uk’ in June 2023 and this will now be independently reviewed in the next three months during content population. We will address high priority issues in the next three months. While WordPress themes cannot guarantee full compliance, we ensure that this subdomain should pass basic accessibility requirements. 

  • We are doing a blend of automated and manual checks with the help of Siteimprove, WAVE, ARCTool and Axe accessibility checkers to monitor and keep track of the fixes we need to do across the website.  
  • We are working with Fabrik brands on WordPress accessibility capabilities to fix issues raised in our automated and manual checks and think about future developments.  
  • We check adjust our content and accessibility guidelines.  
  • We will be encouraging our content editors to reduce the high volume of web pages so that auditing activities can be more easily managed.  
  • We are also updating the ways in which we provide training and best practice to those working on our website.
